Mar2003 Whilst in Boulder, I went up to Sybil and Richard's homestead to visit and check out the progress of their Straw Bale Cabin. This is the bed corner. I can't call it a bedroom as the cabin is basically one room. The adobe walls are nearing completion. These walls are done, unless they decide to do a lime white wash. Up in the corner are wine bottle that poke through the walls and allow light in, especially at sunrise. The wood under the rock arch is a "Truth Door", which opens up to show that the wall truly is made of straw bales.
The lump in the middle of the bed is Oddball the cat who crawls up under the covers to sleep.
The cabin has an incredibly warm rich comfortable and organic feel. The large front South facing windows make it very bright. The house is also very warm.
The adobe makes very nice walls and floors. I thought the walls would easily "shed" particles and dirt, but they don't. I am most impressed with the adobe. (The fact that the adobe consists of dirt, straw, lime, and burro poop doesn't bother me at all. I'm just that kind of sophisticated guy.)
The plan this summer is to put in the adobe floor and finish the last of the adobe walls.
May2003 While holed up here in Virginia, I spend quite a bit of time watching the cats, squirrels and birds. These squirrels are used to their sunflower seeds and corn. They have no qualms about banging on the windows when we forget to feed them. Who has trained whom? Anyway they are good clean entertainment.
