Lions, Tigers, and Brown Bears,....Oh My!
05Sept2004  We went bear watching over in Geographic Harbor with Bald Mountain Air.  We sat up on the river bank and watched about 20 brown bears gorging themselves with salmon.  This bear decided to eat her salmon about 15 feet from us (twice).  Some of the bears were catching fish in the river below us, 10 or 15 feet away.  For the most part the bears didn't pay us any mind.  There was one tense moment when a female was trying to get away from bore (a huge one with a huge pot belly or salmon gut) and it appeared she was going to run right through us as one would run through deep grass, but the situation diffused itself.  Watching the bears for several hours at this close range was one of the coolest things I have ever done.  I would highly recommend Bald Mountain Air.  They have a great product, well maintained planes and boats and are just plain good folk.
